San Marino, Righi: “Is politics blocking Landolfo’s return as head surgeon?”

Domani Motus Liberi files parliamentary question after claims surgeon could be offered only an assistant role

Giovanni Landolfo would like to return to the State Hospital, but his reinstatement as head of the Surgery department may be blocked by political interference, with talk of offering him only the role of assistant surgeon instead. This is according to Fabio Righi of Domani Motus Liberi, who raised the issue in a post and announced he would file a parliamentary question (interpellanza) seeking clarification.

The dispute centres on the position under which the doctor might return to service. Righi describes the claims as rumours still to be verified: “There is persistent talk circulating which, if confirmed, would be of unprecedented seriousness.”

“Dr Giovanni Landolfo, the former head of Surgery at our State Hospital, would like to return to San Marino. This is news that should be welcomed with open arms in a country that keeps losing doctors and talented professionals,” he writes.

According to Righi, however, this potential return is not being matched by a willingness to reinstate him in his former role: “And yet? It seems that certain political forces — the usual ones — are standing in the way of his return to the post, even going so far as to suggest he come back only as a plain assistant surgeon.”

Domani Motus Liberi is now seeking answers on these alleged obstacles through a formal parliamentary question. “As Domani – Motus Liberi, we have urgently filed a parliamentary question to shed full light on this matter. We want names, facts and clear answers.”

The accusation points to possible political interference in decisions over medical appointments. Righi is careful to stress that the information still needs to be confirmed: “If this were true, it would be yet another scandal involving a political class that claims to run our institutions as if they were private property!”

“The Hospital does not belong to political parties, doctors’ careers cannot depend on politics, and the health of Sammarinese citizens cannot be sacrificed on the altar of someone’s interests!”, he continues.

The post ends with a call for change: “It is time to put an end to this way of doing things, which is causing serious damage to our country.”
