Rents are climbing, homes are becoming harder to find, and young people are leaving the country because they can no longer afford a place to live. San Marino’s housing crisis is no longer affecting just a handful of people — it now touches a growing number of families, young people and workers across the Republic.
The issue has also reached the Grand and General Council (Consiglio Grande e Generale), where several councillors raised concerns about rising rental costs and the shrinking supply of available housing. The debate led to a commitment, approved unanimously, to present updated data on the housing situation to the relevant Council commissions by September 2026.
The CT Civic Group of San Marino (Gruppo Civico CT San Marino) wants to arrive at that deadline armed not only with statistics but also with the real-life experiences of those living through the crisis every day. To that end, it has launched a collection of anonymous testimonies, open to all citizens: those searching for a home without success, those struggling to keep up with rent payments, and those who have already left San Marino — or are considering doing so — because they can no longer afford to stay.
The testimonies will be gathered through an online form, completely anonymous, and will help build as concrete a picture as possible of the situation, to be brought to the attention of the public and institutions ahead of the review scheduled for September.
“Figures and official statements only tell part of the story,” the CT Civic Group of San Marino points out. “We want the voices of those who deal with unaffordable rents every day, or who are forced to leave San Marino, to be heard as well when the issue reaches the Commission in September. That’s why we’re asking anyone facing these difficulties to share their story with us, with full anonymity guaranteed.”
The form for sharing testimonies is available through the social media channels of the CT Civic Group of San Marino. It is enough to briefly describe one’s experience, without providing any identifying details.
