Energy and water: San Marino prepares for winter, aiming for over 20% energy self-sufficiency by 2027

San Marino moves on two fronts — energy and water — with new investments to boost the Republic's self-sufficiency ahead of the colder months.

High energy prices and a water emergency that cannot yet be considered over. San Marino is preparing for the coming months by working on both fronts, with new investments aimed at progressively increasing the Republic’s self-sufficiency.

Providing an update is Secretary of State for relations with AASS (the state utility authority) Alessandro Bevitori, interviewed by San Marino RTV. On the energy front, work continues on efficiency upgrades and photovoltaic installations on public buildings, alongside projects launched abroad. The target set for 2027 is to reach a level of energy self-sufficiency above 20%.

This strategy takes on particular significance heading into winter. At the European level, forecasts point to a manageable supply situation, though with the risk that prices will remain high.

The water question also remains open. San Marino continues to grapple with a water emergency and, alongside the effects expected from upcoming rainfall, structural measures are being studied to increase supply capacity.

Among these is the expansion of the Torello plant. According to what Bevitori told San Marino RTV, technical assessments are underway, and the project could increase the plant’s capacity fivefold, significantly boosting the amount of water that can be drawn from the lake.

At the same time, technical discussions are continuing on a medium-to-long-term investment in the territory, again with the goal of strengthening the Republic’s water self-sufficiency.

Meanwhile, AASS has launched the “Dicci la tua” (“Tell us your view”) campaign, a questionnaire for users to gather feedback and suggestions on the quality of the main services provided.
