San Marino left the semi-final at the Royal Malta Golf Club, par 69, with its head held high. The women’s national team took on Malta — runners-up after stroke-play qualifying and favourites given home advantage — with great character, keeping two matches alive until the 17th hole.
In the foursomes, Bianca Maria Gardini and Anita Masini fought all the way to the end before going down 2&1 to Laya Cristina and Filippa Schulze Döring. Aisha Nouioui also turned in a strong performance, holding her own against Elliana Buhagiar before losing a tightly contested match 2&1.
San Marino’s point once again came from Giada Pelliccioni, who delivered a display of great solidity against Serena Falzon Sant Manduca. Giada prevailed with a commanding 4&3 victory, claiming her second consecutive singles win after her success in the quarter-final against Liechtenstein.
Having beaten Liechtenstein 2-1 and gone toe-to-toe with the host nation Malta, San Marino now stands among the top four teams at the European Shield Championship and will play tomorrow for a place on the podium.
In the final for third and fourth place, the blue-and-white side will face Bulgaria, a team of great international pedigree that has already won the competition and claimed multiple medals. The foursomes will tee off at 11:21am, followed by the two singles matches at 11:31am and 11:41am.
For San Marino, it is a chance to crown an already remarkable campaign — one built on determination, unity and outstanding team spirit — with a medal.
