He hit a pedestrian, left San Marino, and returned the next morning to watch a Rallylegend special stage. It was on his way back in that civil police officers traced his car. A 22-year-old resident of Belluno now faces criminal charges and has had his driving licence seized.
The collision took place on Saturday, October 10, at around 9:30 pm, on Via XXI Settembre in Fiorentino. A man from Brescia, born in 1982, was struck by a black Audi, which then fled the scene. Rescued and taken to the State Hospital, the pedestrian suffered injuries with a five-day prognosis.
Civil Police officers gathered witness statements and reviewed camera footage, managing to retrieve the licence plate and reconstruct the car’s route: after the collision, the Audi had left San Marino territory via the Chiesanuova border crossing.
On the morning of Sunday, October 11, a rapid-response patrol tracked down the vehicle, which had returned to San Marino to watch the Piandavello special stage. The driver was taken to the Murata police headquarters for questioning.
The 22-year-old was reported for failing to render assistance, for not preserving the position of the vehicles after the accident, and for leaving the scene without waiting for police to arrive. His driving licence was also seized, and he was fined for his driving conduct.
At around the same time as the collision, another car drew the attention of officers on the scene responding to the emergency. A patrol from the fire prevention unit stopped a modified BMW: its driver, born in 2006 and residing in Novafeltria, was performing stunt manoeuvres at the Fiorentino roundabout.
He too was issued administrative fines. The BMW’s registration document was also seized, and the vehicle will have to undergo a special roadworthiness inspection.
