Update: pedestrians hit on Fiorina pavement, both victims in serious condition

Two men struck by a car while walking along Via Cinque Febbraio in Fiorina are now hospitalised with guarded prognoses at Cesena's Bufalini hospital.

Both men struck by a car in Fiorina on Wednesday afternoon are in guarded condition at Cesena’s Bufalini hospital, having been hit while standing on the pavement of Via Cinque Febbraio, heading towards Dogana.

The victims are a 33-year-old from Bologna and a 32-year-old, also from the Bologna area, residing in Santarcangelo di Romagna. According to San Marino RTV, the two were likely on their way to watch the Rallylegend trials.

They were struck by a BMW bearing Italian number plates, which had veered off the road after a roundabout. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, hitting the pedestrians before coming to a stop on nearby terrain.

The 32-year-old from Santarcangelo was reportedly thrown several metres by the impact. Both men suffered serious injuries and were taken to the hospital in Cesena.

Behind the wheel was a 32-year-old Italian man living in the area, who was taken to San Marino’s hospital for checks. He reportedly managed to get out of the car unassisted and his life is not in danger.

The driver will undergo testing to determine whether he had consumed alcohol or drugs.

Civil Police officers are reconstructing the dynamics of the crash. Among the theories being examined is that the car was travelling at excessive speed, though investigations are still ongoing.

Braking marks and evidence gathered so far suggest that the BMW was the only vehicle involved. Investigators are also reviewing footage from security cameras at nearby shops to establish exactly how the accident occurred and at what speed the car was travelling.
