Five days of documentaries on the war in Ukraine, featuring screenings and public debates dedicated to the relationship between art, testimony and civil resistance. The DocUcraina-Storia in Scena festival will run from 10 to 14 November, every day at 5.30pm, at the DAMSLab auditorium in Bologna, in Piazzetta P.P. Pasolini 5b.
The programme offers a selection of recent documentaries, each followed by a discussion with scholars and guests. Opening remarks will be delivered by Pina Picierno, Vice-President of the European Parliament.
Among those taking part in the debate on Friday 13 November is Michele Chiaruzzi, professor of International Relations and History of Political Thought at the University of Bologna and director of the Research Centre for International Relations at the University of the Republic of San Marino.
He will be joined by Nona Mikhelidze, a researcher at the Istituto Affari Internazionali and winner of the 2023 Viareggio-Répaci journalism prize, and Federico Varese, Associate Senior Research Fellow at the University of Oxford and Professor of Sociology at Sciences Po Paris, who in 2024 received the Thorsten Sellin, Sheldon and Eleanor Glueck Award from the American Society of Criminology.
“The aim is to create a space for interdisciplinary dialogue between studies on art and communication, media and film, international politics and public diplomacy,” the festival’s presentation states. At the heart of the event is the role of audiovisual media “in documenting the war, preserving memory, supporting civil and cultural resilience, and examining the specific nature of Ukraine and of the conflict on Europe’s eastern border.”
