The Party of Socialists and Democrats (PSD) has expressed its condolences on the passing of Antonio Carattoni, known to all as Tonino, and extends its sympathy to his family, his son Enrico, and his loved ones. In its tribute, the PSD recalls Carattoni’s institutional and cultural career, highlighting his role in the history of San Marino’s left.
“With Tonino, we lose an important figure in the history of San Marino’s left, a man who lived through decades of political and social transformation, contributing with his commitment to the growth and modernization of the Republic,” the party wrote.
A former Secretary of State for Industry and Crafts and later Captain Regent, Carattoni combined his public offices with a deep study of the country’s political, economic, and social history, through research and publications. The PSD also recalled his involvement in cooperative initiatives and the Fondazione XXV Marzo, dedicated to preserving and passing on San Marino’s historical memory.
The party’s tribute also reflects on his approach to politics: “Tonino was above all a man of political thought, an intellectual capable of combining depth of analysis with concrete action. He had a vision of politics that went beyond mere contingencies, an ability to read the balance of power, interpret change, and envision new perspectives that made him a valuable point of reference.”
This role also extended to his relationships with others. “For many, he was a point of reference, someone to turn to for advice, to discuss an assessment, or to better understand even the most complex aspects of political life. A role carried out with authority, nourished by his knowledge of history, his culture, and his long experience,” the statement reads.
The PSD ties Carattoni’s journey to its own political roots, recalling the experiences from which the party itself emerged. “Political circumstances change, and paths may diverge, but there are roots, values, and bonds that time does not erase. It is also through remembering figures like Tonino that a political community rediscovers the meaning of its own history and the responsibility to pass it on to new generations.”
The statement concludes with a message to the family: “The PSD embraces the Carattoni family, his son Enrico, and all his loved ones with sincere affection, sharing in the sorrow of this moment and paying tribute to Tonino’s memory with gratitude and respect.”
