Antonio Carattoni, former Captain Regent of the Republic of San Marino, died overnight at the age of 80. The State Congress (Congresso di Stato) announced his passing with a message of condolence addressed to his family and to the nation.
“The State Congress of the Republic of San Marino shares in the grief of the nation and stands close to the family in mourning the loss of Antonio Carattoni, who passed away overnight at the age of 80,” the government statement reads.
Carattoni held the office of Captain Regent during the October 2006–April 2007 term, serving alongside Roberto Giorgetti. His career within the country’s institutions also included serving as a member of the Grand and General Council (Consiglio Grande e Generale) from 1978 to 1988 and again from 1993 to 1998, as well as serving as Secretary of State for Industry and Craftsmanship from 1983 to 1986.
He also represented San Marino in international bodies, including the Council of Europe and the OECD.
“A long-standing figure in the political and institutional history of the Titano, Antonio Carattoni spent decades devoted to public service with dedication and rigour,” the State Congress wrote in remembering his work.
An economist and the author of publications on the trade union movement and on San Marino’s economic history, Carattoni combined his political commitment with research into the country’s history and society. In its message, the government credited him with “a decisive contribution to the legislative and administrative development of the Republic, taking part in crucial reforms for the modernisation of the State.”
Condolences were also extended to his son, Enrico Carattoni, a member of the Council: “The State Congress offers its heartfelt condolences to the family, extending its closeness to his son, Councillor Enrico Carattoni, and to all his loved ones.”
