Savings on a full tank continue to draw Italian motorists to San Marino. At some filling stations on the Titano, diesel costs €1.99 per litre and petrol €1.74, with an additional 20-cent rebate through the Smac card, extended until October 31.
The rush for fuel has put pressure on the Eni station in Borgo Maggiore, which ran out of supplies on Sunday. Station operator Andrea Cervellini told Il Resto del Carlino that he had to put up a sign announcing the stock had run out while awaiting a new delivery. The Smac discount is also available to non-residents, provided they register with identification documents, explains Luca Fabbri of the San Marino Traders’ Union (Unione Sammarinese Commercianti).
Meanwhile, in Italy, the 6.1-cent tax discount on diesel expired at midnight. The government is now looking at floating excise duties, a mechanism that funds tax reductions using the extra VAT revenue generated by rising oil prices. An inter-ministerial decree will need to determine which fuels are covered, the amounts involved, and the duration of the measure.
On the pricing front, Eni has set a 30-day cap of €2.19 for diesel and €1.99 for petrol, with similar initiatives followed by other companies. Between September 27 and October 5, average self-service prices fell: petrol dropped from €2.159 to €2.048, while diesel fell from €2.377 to €2.242 per litre.
