The Government has expressed a positive assessment of the visit to San Marino by Italy’s Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance, Maurizio Leo, seen as further confirmation of Italy’s support for the path toward association with the European Union. The meeting also provided an opportunity to deepen bilateral cooperation ahead of the implementation phase of the agreement, starting with the clarifying addendum.
The talks also touched on several strategic issues in relations between the two countries. Secretary of State for Finance Marco Gatti reaffirmed the commitment to working jointly on matters of shared interest, including the airport, customs, taxation and the financial sector, with the aim of fostering growth and strengthening economic cooperation.
At the same time, an especially intense period is beginning on the international front. While Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Luca Beccari prepares to take part in the United Nations General Assembly, San Marino is awaiting a visit from the new mission chief of the International Monetary Fund. This will be followed in mid-October by the Annual Meetings in Bangkok, and subsequently by the mission dedicated to the Article IV consultation.
The dialogue with the IMF will help assess the performance of San Marino’s economy throughout 2026 and the outlook for the coming months. The Government maintains a confident outlook, while acknowledging the difficulties posed by the international scenario. Particular attention is being paid to the cost of energy, identified as one of the key challenges to be faced during the winter and a factor expected to be scrutinized by rating agencies as well.
The Executive is also working ahead of the signing of the Association Agreement, scheduled for 19 October. Secretary of State for Education and Culture Teodoro Lonfernini stressed the need to prepare all administrations and relevant sectors for the obligations and responsibilities that will come with this new phase.
On the education front, work continues toward a framework law on the education system. A resolution is also expected shortly that will allow for the launch of a trial of the short week in middle schools.
Regarding the University of the Republic of San Marino, the Government views the new term of Rector Paolo Pascucci as a continuation of the path pursued by his predecessor, Corrado Petrocelli. The goal is to consolidate the results achieved so far and further expand the university’s range of academic programs.
