The charm of great cars from the past returns to the roads of Titano. On Saturday 19 September, San Marino will host one of the most evocative stages of the 36th Gran Premio Nuvolari, the international regularity rally dedicated to historic vehicles.
The crews are expected to arrive in the historic centre around 5.30pm via Via Donna Felicissima. From there, the parade will wind through the heart of the City, passing through Piazza della Libertà, with cars continuing to file through until 8.30pm.
The event brings together 300 crews from all over the world, competing over more than 1,100 kilometres across Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, the Marche, Umbria and the Republic of San Marino. As tradition dictates, car number 1 remains symbolically reserved for Tazio Nuvolari, to whom the event is dedicated.
Leading the convoy will be a selection of modern Gran Turismo cars, followed by 260 historic vehicles from 35 manufacturers. Models from Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Lancia, Ferrari, Fiat, Jaguar, Aston Martin, Bentley, Mercedes, BMW, Porsche and Bugatti will parade through Titano. Particularly well represented are the oldest vehicles: 80 examples date back to the period between 1923 and 1939.
Saturday’s stage will set off from Rimini and take the crews through the Marche, Umbria and Tuscany, passing through towns including Sant’Angelo in Vado, Città di Castello, Magione, Cortona and Arezzo. On the return leg, the cars will pass through Sansepolcro and the Passo di Via Maggio, before climbing into the Republic of San Marino and descending once again towards Rimini for the stage finish.
The Gran Premio Nuvolari has its roots in 1954, when the organisers of the Mille Miglia decided to establish a competition in memory of the champion from Mantua, who had passed away the previous year. A tradition that continues to this day and that, on Saturday, will once again pass through the historic centre of San Marino.
