Now there is also a date. San Marino will sign the Association Agreement with the European Union on October 19. Confirmation arrived late in the afternoon from Brussels to the Secretariat of State for Foreign Affairs, as reported by San Marino RTV.
This is the step that had been expected following the green light given by European institutions in July. The Council of the EU had formally authorised the signing and provisional application of the Agreement with San Marino and Andorra on July 16. (European Council)
The October 19 signing will thus mark the conclusion of a negotiating process that lasted more than ten years, beginning in 2015 and reaching the end of formal negotiations in late 2023. From that moment on, the process will once again shift back to Mount Titano.
The next step will be ratification by San Marino, with the Agreement first examined by the Foreign Affairs Committee and subsequently by the Grand and General Council (Consiglio Grande e Generale). Once this process is completed, San Marino will be able to request the provisional application of the Agreement.
According to Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Luca Beccari, speaking to San Marino RTV, the goal is to achieve provisional entry into force between January and February 2027, subject to the necessary technical and administrative procedures.
The Agreement aims to integrate San Marino more deeply into the European single market, regulating, among other things, the free movement of goods, people, services and capital, while keeping the Republic outside the European Union and preserving its state sovereignty. (San Marino RTV)
