Gerardo Giovagnoli and William Casali are set to head for the Supreme Magistracy. The Party of Socialists and Democrats (PSD) and the Christian Democratic Party (PDCS) have respectively put them forward as candidates for the office of Captains Regent for the six-month term running from 1 October 2026 to 1 April 2027. For both men, it would mark their first experience in the Regency.
Gerardo Giovagnoli, born in San Marino on 31 May 1976, is an electronic engineer and a member of the Party of Socialists and Democrats, of which he has also served as political secretary. A member of the Grand and General Council (Consiglio Grande e Generale), he has built up considerable experience in international relations, having served as vice-president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and having been named head of the San Marino delegation to that Assembly.
William Casali, born in San Marino on 15 November 1976, is an entrepreneur and a member of the Christian Democratic Party of San Marino. A qualified accountant, he has been a PDCS member since 2007 and has sat on the party’s leadership board since 2017. He has been a member of the Grand and General Council since 2019 and serves on the Council’s Finance and Budget Committee. Throughout his political career he has also focused on technological innovation and digital transformation, and he is part of the San Marino council delegation to the OSCE.
The designations thus point to the pair set to lead the Republic through the next regency term, from 1 October 2026 to 1 April 2027.
