The historic centre on lockdown, four access checkpoints and reinforced controls along the Pope’s entire route. San Marino is finalising its security plan ahead of the arrival of Leo XIV, expected on Titano on Saturday.
The plan, coordinated by the Gendarmerie, will also involve San Marino’s other police forces, volunteer military personnel and civil protection. Italy will also provide support, sending state police with sniffer dogs and bomb disposal units.
At the heart of the security operation will be the historic centre, where a red zone will come into effect from 7am. Access will only be possible through four staffed checkpoints, with checks carried out on prohibited items, including glass, cans and flammable materials.
Special surveillance will also cover the route taking Leo XIV from the Torraccia airstrip towards Domagnano, Borgo Maggiore and the historic centre. In areas expecting the largest crowds, security presence will be strengthened, including the use of motorbikes and drones. Starting the night before, the streets along the Pope’s route will be cordoned off and bins and containers removed.
The security operation will remain active even after the Pope’s departure, to manage the dispersal of the faithful. On the healthcare front, the Social Security Institute (Iss) has set up dedicated teams to handle any emergencies, without disrupting normal services for citizens.
