One million euros. That is the figure the Municipality of Riccione intends to seek in damages for the harm to its image caused by a video published on TikTok by the account “Legaofficial,” which within just a few days turned into a national political controversy.
The dispute has now moved from public outcry to legal action. The town council has formally instructed its legal office to proceed against the video’s creators, weighing both a criminal complaint for aggravated defamation via social media and a civil action seeking compensation for the damage the content allegedly caused to the city’s image and to the Riccione tourism brand.
On the table is a hefty claim: one million euros. The council has already decided what to do with any sum awarded by the court: it will be allocated entirely to the municipal fund supporting rent payments for families in financial difficulty.
At the heart of the storm is a video that appeared on TikTok on 6 August and quickly went viral, racking up more than 500,000 views. The clip showed footage filmed in Ceuta but presented as if it depicted a beach in Riccione at some point in the future.
The images were accompanied by the caption: “POV: It’s 2030, you’re on the beach in Riccione and Matteo Salvini is no longer Interior Minister.” The content had been posted from a verified account with more than 200,000 followers, using graphics resembling those of the League party (Lega).
For Riccione’s administration, that is precisely the issue: the city’s name was allegedly used to convey a discriminatory message, with consequences reaching far beyond mere political sparring. According to the council, what was truly damaged was the image of Riccione itself — a town whose economy is built in large part on hospitality and tourism.
The first to react was Mayor Daniela Angelini, who called for the immediate removal of the video and urged Matteo Salvini to distance himself from it and apologize to the town, should the account in question actually be linked to his party.
The controversy then reached Rome. Democratic Party MP Andrea Gnassi announced he would file a parliamentary question, describing the content as a form of racist propaganda capable of damaging Riccione’s image.
League MP Jacopo Morrone took a very different view, calling it a “simple provocation,” a “meme,” and an “allegory” tied to the theme of immigration.
That explanation failed to convince Palazzo Mancini, Riccione’s town hall. On the contrary, the council decided to escalate the confrontation further and take the matter to court.
«Riccione is not the backdrop for hate propaganda, nor a stage for anyone’s provocations,» Angelini said pointedly. «Calling a discriminatory piece of content that spread across Italy and dragged our community’s name through the mud an “allegory” or a “simple provocation” is an act of political and institutional irresponsibility that we are not willing to let slide.»
For the mayor, the issue also has a direct bearing on the city’s economy. «Hospitality, respect and inclusion are part of Riccione’s identity and represent a core element of its tourist appeal. Whoever damages that image will have to answer for it legally too.»
Hence the decision to set the requested damages at one million euros. It will, of course, be up to the courts to determine whether grounds exist to recognize the damage and, if so, to what extent.
The administration has, however, already specified how the funds will be used should the legal battle end in its favor.
«If the court rules in our favor,» Angelini concluded, «the entire sum will go to the municipal fund supporting rent payments for families facing financial hardship. A concrete way to turn an episode meant to divide into help for our community.»
What began as a few seconds of video on social media has become first a national political case, and now potentially a million-euro legal battle.
