New European funds to strengthen Ukraine’s defence. To mark the country’s Independence Day, the European Commission has approved procurement contracts worth €6.1 billion, earmarked for air and missile defence systems, missiles, ammunition and radar equipment.
“Europe is proving that our support is unwavering and tangible,” said Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. “As Russia intensifies its attacks, we are stepping up our efforts to help Ukraine protect its people and defend its skies.”
The new allocation is part of the €90 billion loan in support of Kyiv and comes after Russia carried out 376 missile attacks in July alone. The €6.1 billion is in addition to €16 billion in procurement plans already approved, of which €8.35 billion has already been disbursed.
Kyiv will be able to receive payments by submitting to the Commission the contracts signed with defence companies. Overall, since 2022 the EU and its member states have provided Ukraine with €220.2 billion in support, including €3.8 billion drawn from the proceeds of immobilised Russian assets.
