San Marino conference revisits De Gasperi and the idea of a reform-driving centre

The Association of Christian Democrats hosts a public meeting on the legacy of Alcide De Gasperi, with institutional and academic speakers from San Marino and Italy.

The relevance of Alcide De Gasperi and his civic and European legacy will be at the heart of a public meeting scheduled for Tuesday, 13 October at 4pm in the Sala Montelupo in Domagnano. The National Association of Christian Democrats (ANDC) invites the public to the presentation of Igino Giordani’s book “Alcide De Gasperi. Rivoluzione, Riforme, Libertà” (“Alcide De Gasperi: Revolution, Reforms, Freedom”), published by Studium in a new edition edited by Lucio D’Ubaldo and Alberto Lo Presti, with an introduction by Giuseppe Fioroni.

The event is held under the patronage of the Secretariat of State for Foreign Affairs. Secretary of State Luca Beccari will deliver institutional greetings, while Giuseppe Fioroni, former Italian Minister of Education, will introduce the discussion. Journalist Osvaldo Bevilacqua will moderate the debate, with closing remarks by Lucio D’Ubaldo, editor of the volume.

Speakers will include the Bishop of San Marino-Montefeltro Domenico Beneventi, Italy’s Ambassador to San Marino Fabrizio Colaceci, the Rector of the University of San Marino Paolo Pascucci, and the Director of the Salesians of San Marino, Father Marco Mazzanti. Also taking part in the discussion will be Councillor Francesco Mussoni and Nicola Barone, ambassador, special envoy and president of TIM San Marino.

The book revives Igino Giordani’s account of the man who led Italy’s democratic reconstruction and tied its future to Europe. This will serve as the starting point for a broader discussion on the relationship between freedom, reform and democracy, and on the contribution of Christian culture to public life.

The San Marino event has also drawn attention from Il Domani d’Italia, which links it to a parallel conference held the same day in Rome by the De Gasperi Foundation. The Italian newspaper sees in the Titano debate an echo of the idea of a centre capable of steering change and driving reform, recalling De Gasperi’s own formula of a “centre marching towards the left.” The Rome event, meanwhile, will explore the relationship between Christian democracy, liberalism and conservatism, with particular attention to the German experience.
