San Marino: breast cancer survivors and healthcare staff walk together for Pink October

A fashion show united women who have faced breast cancer with the doctors and nurses who support them, raising funds for an AI diagnostic tool at the State Hospital.

A fashion show bringing together women who have faced breast cancer, walking alongside the doctors and nurses who support patients throughout their treatment journey. The event, organized by Giorgia Boutique in collaboration with the Soroptimist International Club of the Republic of San Marino and ASDOS, took place on 13 October in San Marino as part of Pink October initiatives.

The event drew a large audience, according to organizers, and had a charitable purpose. Part of the proceeds from Giorgia Boutique’s sales will be donated to ASDOS, the Sammarinese Association of Breast Cancer Patients (Associazione Sammarinese Donne Operate al Seno), to help fund the purchase of artificial intelligence-based software to support early breast cancer diagnosis, intended for use at the State Hospital.

The driving force behind the fashion show was Francesca Barbieri, owner of the boutique and president of the Sammarinese Soroptimist club. The press release explains the initiative’s purpose: “The deeper goal was to restore confidence, self-esteem and awareness to women who have faced breast cancer, reminding them that the illness does not define who they are and must not deprive them of the chance to feel beautiful, self-assured and fully in control of their own lives.”

Barbieri explained the meaning behind the initiative in these words: “When I thought about organizing this fashion show, I didn’t simply want to present clothes. I wanted to tell something far more important. I wanted to send a message of hope, encouragement and trust to all women who are facing or have faced breast cancer.

An illness like breast cancer can change a woman’s body, it can leave scars, both visible and invisible, but it cannot erase who that woman is. It cannot take away her dignity, her beauty, her femininity.

Because femininity is not measured by a perfect body. Femininity is something far deeper. It lies in a way of being, in a look, in a smile, in the strength to start again.

Today I wanted every woman facing this illness, or who has faced it, to look at these wonderful models and think:

‘I too can smile again. I too can feel beautiful. I too can go on living my life fully.’

We must also not forget that breast cancer, although much more rarely, can affect men too. This is why prevention and awareness must concern everyone.

Today we do not want to hide the suffering, nor pretend that everything is easy. But we do want to remember that, even in the most difficult moments, there can be new possibilities, new smiles and new hope.

That is why I wanted these very women to walk the runway. Not to put their illness on display, but to celebrate their lives, their beauty and their strength.”

The participation of healthcare staff also gave space to the bond that forms during treatment. “Having the women who have faced the illness walk the same runway as the professionals who accompany them daily on their treatment journey symbolically represented the value of closeness, trust and mutual support,” the press release states.

On this point, Barbieri added: “I strongly wanted this joint presence because I believe that a woman’s journey through breast cancer is not made up only of therapies and procedures, but also of human relationships, listening, encouragement and psychological support. Today, seeing them walk together, we were able to tell that story of this deeply important bond as well.”

The organizer extended her thanks to both the participating women and the healthcare professionals: “I want to warmly thank all our wonderful models, who enthusiastically agreed to take part. They were fabulous, elegant, smiling and, above all, authentic. They managed to convey an energy and emotion we will not easily forget.

I am equally sincerely grateful to the doctors and nurses who shared this experience with them, demonstrating once again how important not only medical care is, but also human closeness and psychological support.”
