Recognition of same-sex parent families, registration of birth and adoption certificates issued abroad, and the correction of Civil Registry records for those who have undergone a gender affirmation process. These are the themes at the heart of three Arengo petitions (Istanze d’Arengo) set to reach the next session of the Grand and General Council (Consiglio Grande e Generale), which RETE has announced it will support.
“With the upcoming session of the Grand and General Council, three Arengo petitions will come before the Chamber, raising a key question: are our laws keeping pace with the times, and capable of recognising all the people and families that exist in our country?” reads the statement issued by the movement.
The three proposals, put forward by the Associazione 121, address distinct areas. “The first petition concerns the registration in San Marino of birth and adoption certificates issued abroad for same-sex parent families. The second asks that, in same-sex parent families too, both parents be recognised in the Civil Registry and be able to fully exercise their parental responsibilities.”
The third petition, meanwhile, concerns the recognition of gender identity in official documents. The proposal, RETE explains, aims to “clearly regulate the possibility, for those who have undergone a gender affirmation process, of amending it in the registers and documents of the Civil Registry.”
Although they address different issues, the movement says the three proposals share a common thread. “These are different matters, but linked by a common thread: when the law fails to recognise a reality that already exists, it is the people living that reality who are left without full protection,” the statement continues.
Hence RETE’s decision to support the three Arengo petitions as they move through the Council. “RETE always stands on the side of rights, and in this case too it will firmly support the three petitions put forward by Associazione 121. We will keep working to ensure San Marino excludes no one, leaving no one without protection before the Institutions,” the movement concludes.
