The green light has been given to renew the public employment contract, with a pay increase of 3% for 2025 and an advance of 2% for 2026. The Socialist and Democratic Party (PSD) has welcomed the agreement, emphasizing the recovery of purchasing power for public employees while pointing to the transformation of the public administration as the next step forward.
“The signing of the agreement for public employment is good news for thousands of workers and their families. The 3% increase for 2025 and the 2% advance for 2026 represent an important first step in recovering at least part of the purchasing power lost in recent years,” reads a statement released by the PSD.
The party specifically highlighted the rising cost of living. “From 2014 to today, prices have increased by more than 20%, while public employees’ wages have grown far less, and worker contributions have also risen. Behind these numbers are families: grocery bills, utility payments, mortgages, rent, and a cost of living that has become heavier to bear.”
For the PSD, this issue extends beyond the public sector alone. “Defending the purchasing power of workers is a priority, in both the private and public sectors,” the statement continues. The party went on to praise “the result achieved and the work carried out by the Secretary of State for Internal Affairs, Andrea Belluzzi, together with the government delegation, the Civil Service Department, and the trade unions.”
Beyond the economic aspects, the PSD links the contract renewal to the quality of public services. “When we talk about public employment, we are also talking about services for everyone. Public services include the hospital where we receive care, the schools where our children grow up, public safety, road maintenance, and many other services we use every day. Valuing public sector work means improving the quality of services and the lives of the entire country.”
For the party, however, the agreement just reached represents only the first part of the journey. The next step will be the reorganization of the public administration, particularly in light of the Association Agreement with the European Union and San Marino’s entry into the single market.
“The economic agreement is a first step. Now the second phase of this journey begins: transforming the public administration to prepare San Marino for the Association Agreement and the European single market. What’s needed is a simpler, faster public administration, capable of leveraging new technologies, valuing professionalism and accountability, and better meeting the needs of citizens and businesses.”
According to the PSD, this transformation must go hand in hand with the Republic’s European path: “The European journey will require a leap in quality: a modern public administration, capable of accompanying the country’s transformation.”
The party concluded by pledging its commitment both to fair wages and to reforming the public sector. “The PSD will stand by workers and their families, defending wages and purchasing power, and will remain committed to ensuring that this new contractual season goes hand in hand with the transformation of the public administration. Valued workers and better services for everyone: the two must go together.”
