Man dies alone at home in Rimini, unnoticed for days: body found two weeks later

Neighbours alerted authorities after noticing a foul smell and the man's prolonged absence

He had been dead for at least fifteen days by the time he was found inside his home. A tragedy of loneliness was uncovered on Tuesday morning in Via Ceccarelli, in Rimini’s historic centre, where a 70-year-old man had lived.

The alarm was raised by some neighbours, who had grown concerned after not seeing the man for some time and after noticing a strong foul odour coming from the apartment, located on the first floor of a small villa.

Around 10:30 am, firefighters and State Police arrived at the scene. Firefighters reached the terrace using a ladder and, after forcing open a French window, managed to enter the apartment.

Inside, they made a grim discovery: the 70-year-old was lying on the floor, lifeless and in an advanced state of decomposition. The condition of the apartment forced rescuers to wear respirators while checking the various rooms.

A coroner was also called to the scene. According to initial findings, the death appears to have been caused by a sudden illness and is believed to have occurred at least fifteen days before the body was found.
