Giochi del Titano scandal and healthcare woes: Repubblica Futura demands transparency from government

Opposition party criticizes government over casino affair, ISS healthcare problems and restrictions on financial sector debate, calling for stronger scrutiny.

The Giochi del Titano affair, problems in the healthcare sector, and restrictions on debate over the financial sector. These were the key issues at the heart of the assembly of Repubblica Futura, which met on Thursday, October 8, under the chairmanship of Mara Valentini. The party reviewed its political and institutional activity, calling on its council group to step up its opposition efforts.

On the Giochi del Titano case, the assembly voiced “strong concerns” and leveled direct criticism at the government and at the Secretary of State for Finance, Marco Gatti.

“There are deeply troubling allegations of wrongdoing, coupled with an utter failure to act on the part of the Congress of State, and in particular of the Secretary of State for Finance Marco Gatti,” the statement reads. “The Assembly has asked the council group to take even stronger action to ensure transparency: what has happened is serious and could have heavy repercussions on the Republic’s image.”

Another front concerns the ISS (the Social Security Institute, which runs the national healthcare service). Repubblica Futura pointed to reports of staff departures and to problems the party has long been flagging, challenging the rosy picture of the healthcare service presented by the government and the institute’s leadership.

“The reports of staff fleeing the ISS, together with the well-known problems we have been denouncing for some time — which remain mere statements of intent — are alarming when set against the idyllic picture painted by the government and the ISS leadership.”

Criticism also centered on mammography screening. “The health directorate’s stance on mammography screening is scientifically and medically baffling, and outrageous given that savings are being sought at the expense of citizens’ wellbeing. Perhaps in order to cash in on the bonuses tied to meeting the Executive Committee’s targets,” the party claims.

The assembly also raised the case of an ISS doctor who is due to return from a period of leave, without naming the individual. According to Repubblica Futura, the physician’s return could be hampered by bureaucratic obstacles.

“There is also the critical matter of a professional — a leading ISS physician — who is due to return after a period of leave, and who appears to be facing byzantine bureaucratic hurdles that could jeopardize his very future within our hospital. Bureaucratic hurdles built, as always, through the meddling of some nosy politician.”

In closing, the party challenged the Congress of State’s decision regarding communications on the financial sector. The assembly, the statement notes, condemned the choice “to gag members of the Grand and General Council (Consiglio Grande e Generale) on the state of the financial sector — a gag imposed by decree under threat of invoking Article 377 of the Criminal Code.”

Alongside its criticisms, the meeting also set a date for 2027: a conference dedicated to the main issues on San Marino’s agenda, the Association Agreement with the European Union, and the state of the international economy.

“The conference will provide an opportunity to take stock of the opposition work carried out by Repubblica Futura and to reflect on possible political scenarios in light of the majority’s evident difficulties, as well as on the policy initiatives still to be developed,” the party concludes.
