Fake carabinieri try two scams in Valmarecchia, arrested in Villa Verucchio

A failed con in Novafeltria led scammers posing as military police to a second attempt in Villa Verucchio, where real carabinieri were waiting.

First came the attempted scam in Novafeltria, then a trip to Villa Verucchio to try to con another woman. But the plan fell apart: two fake carabinieri were arrested by the real military police just as they were trying to pull off their second attempt.

The pair are two Italian nationals living in the Rimini area, now under house arrest awaiting a fast-track trial set for Monday, October 19.

It all began in Novafeltria, where the scammers had targeted a family. One of the two, posing as a lieutenant from the Villa Verucchio carabinieri station, called claiming that the family’s forty-year-old son needed to report to the station over an alleged case of document cloning.

The second call was meant to reach one of the elderly parents, but once again it was the son who answered. In the meantime, the real carabinieri, already alerted, had reached and secured the house.

With the first attempt foiled, the two moved on to Villa Verucchio, where they had identified another potential victim.

But when they showed up to collect cash and jewelry, they found the military police waiting for them instead — and were promptly stopped and arrested.

The operation was carried out by carabinieri from the Novafeltria company, aided by the prompt report of the first attempted scam.
