The escape of four fallow deer from the Montecchio park has come to a happy ending. The two young females who were still missing have now returned to the enclosure, following the recovery of the two adult animals on Monday morning.
The deer are believed to have escaped sometime during the night between Sunday and Monday, slipping through a gap in the perimeter fence. Investigations into how the fence was damaged are still underway.
Unlike the other animals, the two younger females apparently stayed close to the park, likely never straying far from their mothers — a circumstance that made their recovery easier.
The decision to keep the area calm and leave food available also proved decisive, helping avoid startling the animals. The gate was left open specifically to encourage their return, and in the end the two females made their way back on their own.
This brings to a close the operation carried out by Apas volunteers: all four fallow deer are now safely back inside the park.
