The 53rd Consulta of San Marino citizens residing abroad has opened at the Teatro Titano, bringing together representatives from various countries for three days of meetings with the institutions. Until Sunday, delegates will discuss needs, proposals and new initiatives, ahead of a vote on the concluding resolution. The delegates were also received in audience by the Captains Regent. Among those taking part is the newly formed San Marino Academic Union (Unione Accademica Sammarinese, UAS).
On the table are the themes that recur at every edition, from citizenship to voting rights, but also some new proposals announced by the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, International Economic Cooperation and Telecommunications, Luca Beccari.
The first reverses the direction of the cultural stays programme. «Among the proposals we are working on is one to introduce, alongside the cultural stays, a reverse programme: that is, visits by young San Marino residents to our communities abroad, perhaps aimed at secondary school students», Beccari explained. Until now the flow has gone in one direction only, with descendants of emigrants coming to discover their country of origin.
The other two proposals concern facilities and services: identifying a new home for the Museo dell’Emigrante (Emigrant Museum) and introducing digital services to simplify consular procedures, especially for the most distant communities, where every formality currently involves long distances and waiting times.
The Consulta remains the event that holds together a network of communities scattered around the world yet bound by the same sense of belonging — one that, over the years, has produced concrete results born precisely from the dialogue between past editions and the institutions.
