The toll from the serious accident that occurred on Sunday morning on the A14 motorway, between the Riccione and Rimini Sud tollgates, has worsened. After the 75-year-old motorcyclist died instantly, the 65-year-old woman travelling with him has also died.
The woman had been admitted in critical condition to the Bufalini hospital in Cesena, where her heart stopped beating on Sunday evening. Immediately after the crash, emergency medical teams had managed to resuscitate her before arranging an urgent transfer by air ambulance. However, the extremely severe injuries sustained in the impact proved fatal.
The accident had occurred at around 11:30 am along the northbound carriageway, about a kilometre from the Montefeltro service area. According to initial reconstructions, the BMW GS motorcycle carrying the couple appears to have rear-ended a Hyundai travelling in the third lane. Both riders had been violently thrown onto the asphalt.
Nothing could be done to save the 75-year-old man, while the woman was rescued and taken to Cesena. Emergency responders at the scene included the 118 emergency service, two ambulances, a medical car, an air ambulance and the Motorway Police, with traffic temporarily halted to allow rescue operations to proceed.
