Seventh place and a new personal best for Margherita Gregoroni at the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar. The young Sammarinese swimmer closed the 200m individual medley final in 2:27.22, shaving more than two seconds off the time she posted in the morning heats (2:29.50).
It was an important result for the San Marino Team athlete, who in her first Youth Olympic final managed to finish among the top eight, ahead of Shannon Qing Yan Tan. The gold medal went to Japan’s Mana Ishikawa.
“I’m very pleased with this 200m medley: I set my personal best, and making it to a Youth Olympic final was anything but a given. I wasn’t expecting it, and when I found out I’d done it, I felt a huge rush of emotion,” Gregoroni said after the race.
Her experience in Dakar continues on 6 November, when the Sammarinese athlete will return to the pool for her final event, the 200m freestyle.
