Revolut down: what’s happening? Other UK banks hit, Reuters links outage to Google Cloud

Reports against Lloyds and HSBC also spike as Google Cloud suffers a London-region outage, while Italian banks remain largely unaffected

At 8:08 this morning, a fault began affecting dozens of Google Cloud services in its London region, according to Google itself. Within minutes, reports of problems with Revolut surged, followed shortly after by complaints about Lloyds Bank. The two curves rose in tandem, while Italian banks remained largely unaffected.

According to the Reuters news agency, citing a source familiar with the matter, Revolut’s outage is directly linked to the Google Cloud disruption.

Neither Revolut nor Google has officially confirmed this, and neither company has yet explained the cause.

The scale of the disruption is reflected in data from Downdetector, the site that tracks user-submitted outage reports, which we monitored hour by hour (all times are Italian local time). In Italy, reports against Revolut jumped from zero to 122 by 8am, then to 947 by 8:30am, peaking at 1,509 shortly after 9:15am. The pattern in the United Kingdom followed the same trajectory: from zero at 7:50am to 740 reports by 8:20am, peaking at 1,501 at 9:05am.

Other British services were affected during the same window. Lloyds Bank, which typically receives very few reports on an ordinary day, climbed to 108 by 8:20am and to 479 by around 10:30am. Reports concerning Google Cloud itself, submitted by businesses that rely on it, rose from zero to 353 by 10:20am. HSBC was added to the list later, peaking at 274 reports at 11:20am.

In Italy, by contrast, traditional banks remained largely unaffected.

Intesa Sanpaolo recorded no more than 19 reports, while UniCredit stayed below 10.

Revolut is a Google Cloud customer.

Google itself, on the page dedicated to its clients, states that the digital bank’s core infrastructure runs on its servers.

Lloyds uses Google Cloud for its artificial intelligence systems, while it has announced plans to migrate its banking service databases to Oracle and Microsoft.

Revolut acknowledged the disruption on X, Reddit and Facebook, assuring customers that their money and data remain secure.

However, the company’s official service status page continued to show everything as operational until after 9am. It now lists 31 services as partially unavailable, ranging from card payments to withdrawals, and marks 9:47am as the time the issue was detected.

The incident touches a sensitive nerve across the entire financial sector. Since November 2025, Google Cloud has been among 19 technology providers that European supervisory authorities overseeing banks, insurers and markets classify as “critical,” alongside Amazon Web Services and Microsoft.

European digital resilience rules, known as DORA, allow regulators to directly oversee these providers: a failure on their end can bring multiple banks to a standstill simultaneously.

By midday, the Google Cloud outage — by then affecting 38 services — remained unresolved, and Revolut had not announced a return to normal operations.
