San Marino beats Switzerland on penalties to claim third place at Futsal Week

The national futsal team, missing Moretti and captain Busignani, wins 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Poreč.

San Marino beat Switzerland on penalties to climb onto the third step of the podium at the Futsal Week October Cup in Poreč, Croatia. Roberto Osimani’s national side sealed a 6-5 victory on penalties after the final finished 1-1 at the end of regulation time.

The start was anything but easy: it took the Swiss just six seconds to take the lead through Berke Celebi, who tapped in at the far post from Kägi’s assist. The Biancoazzurri hit back, however, equalising at 3’48” through De Angelis, quickest to react and bury a loose ball in the box following a free kick.

The match remained tightly contested throughout. Switzerland struck the crossbar, while shortly before half-time goalkeeper Aranya denied Ercolani what looked like a certain goal. In the second half, San Marino held firm defensively and looked to hit on the counter, but the score stayed level.

From the penalty spot, the Titans did not miss a single kick. Switzerland, on the other hand, were made to pay for Arpagaus’s miss, his effort crashing against the post. It was Matteo Chezzi — already on target twice against Greenland — who sealed the win.

San Marino thus wrapped up the tournament in third place, a result achieved without Matteo Moretti and captain Danilo Busignani, both absent from the squad for this trip.
