San Marino, two visitors locked inside First Tower: Cultural Institutions apologise

The Directorate of Cultural Institutions says it is investigating how two visitors ended up trapped inside San Marino's First Tower.

Two visitors were accidentally locked inside San Marino’s First Tower (Prima Torre) on Wednesday, 7 October 2026. The news was confirmed by the Directorate of Cultural Institutions, which expressed its “apologies and sincerest regret” and announced it would look into what happened.

“This is an unfortunate episode that does not meet the standards of hospitality and care that the Cultural Institutions intend to guarantee to everyone who chooses to visit the cultural heritage of the Republic of San Marino,” the statement reads.

The statement does not specify how long the two visitors remained inside the tower, nor how the situation was resolved. The Directorate says it has launched checks to reconstruct the circumstances of the episode and identify the necessary measures to be taken.

“The Directorate takes note of what happened with the utmost seriousness and is carrying out the necessary checks to understand the circumstances that led to the episode, in order to adopt all measures needed to ensure a similar situation cannot happen again,” the statement continues.

Finally, the two visitors were offered “heartfelt apologies for the inconvenience and the unpleasant experience”, with a pledge to “guarantee the utmost attention to the safety, assistance and welcome of visitors.”
