Irene Pivetti, speaker of the Italian Chamber of Deputies from 1994 to 1996, is standing trial before the Court of the Republic of San Marino on charges of tax evasion. She must answer to Article 389, first paragraph, of the Sammarinese criminal code in her capacity as administrator of a company based on the Titano.
The first hearing took place last Friday before Judge Fabio Giovagnoli and was devoted to the formal constitution of the parties. The Fiscal Prosecutor’s Office, represented by lawyer Giorgia Ugolini, requested several technical corrections to the charges.
The Eccellentissima Camera (the state’s chamber, representing San Marino’s public finances) also joined the proceedings as a civil party, seeking compensation for both financial and non-financial damages allegedly «caused by the discredit brought upon the tax administration». It is represented by lawyer Simona Ugolini of the State Advocacy Office. Pivetti’s defence team, lawyers Filippo Cocco and Margherita Albertini, raised no objection either to the amended charges or to the civil party’s admission.
The judge then declared the evidentiary phase of the trial open. Witnesses named by the parties will be heard at the next hearing. The trial is only in its early stages, and the defendant is presumed innocent until a final verdict is reached.
In Italy, Pivetti is involved in a separate case stemming from business dealings in 2016: the purchase and resale of the Isolani Racing Team alongside driver Leo Isolani, as well as similar transactions involving three Ferraris carried out through a Chinese company. She was sentenced to four years in the first-instance ruling for tax evasion and money laundering, a sentence upheld on appeal. However, on 10 July 2026 Italy’s Court of Cassation accepted her defence’s appeal and overturned the appellate ruling, which will now have to be reconsidered.
