170 candidates have registered for the second test assessing knowledge of San Marino’s history and institutions, scheduled for Saturday, 26 September. The exam, introduced under recent citizenship legislation, is one of the mandatory requirements for submitting a naturalisation application.
“The introduction of the test is part of the framework of the Law of 25 February 2026, which reformed the pathway to acquiring citizenship through naturalisation, including among its key features a formal assessment of applicants’ civic knowledge” – explains the Secretariat of State for Internal Affairs in a statement.
The law establishes that the tests are normally held in April and November, while still allowing for additional sessions to be organised. The high number of applicants led to the scheduling of the supplementary September date.
“This is therefore an additional session, which does not alter the ordinary calendar set out by law” – the Secretariat of State clarifies. Anyone unable or unwilling to sit the 26 September test will still have the opportunity to take part in the next ordinary session, scheduled for November.
The first test took place on 18 April and saw 149 candidates take part, of whom 140 passed. Passing the test is a mandatory requirement for submitting a naturalisation application to the Civil Status Offices – Demographic and Electoral Services.
“Knowledge of the history, institutions and values of the Republic is indeed an essential prerequisite for those aspiring to acquire San Marino citizenship, so that they may understand the civic context in which they are called to live, and exercise their rights and fulfil their duties as citizens with full awareness” – the statement continues.
The 26 September test will likewise consist of 15 multiple-choice questions. To pass, candidates must correctly answer at least two-thirds of the questions, meaning 10 out of 15 correct answers.
