Checks at Italian airports got underway this morning following the government’s decision to suspend application of the Schengen agreement with Spain for one month.
The controls have been put in place primarily at Fiumicino, Malpensa and Linate airports, with the Border Police tasked with checking flights arriving from Spain.
At Fiumicino, the first inspections targeted passengers on flights arriving from Barcelona and Madrid. The checks are being carried out on a spot-check basis and involve travelers arriving via Spain from third countries (outside the European Union).
The measure is part of the provisions adopted by the government following the worsening of the migration crisis affecting the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, and involves the temporary reinstatement of internal border controls for connections with Spain.
