The first phase of the plan to upgrade the mobile telephone network in the Republic of San Marino has been completed. With the activation of new installations at Croce di Domagnano, San Marino Città (Kursaal area) and Murata (in the former shooting range area), the Government has announced improved phone coverage and data transmission along the country’s main routes, with the aim of eliminating longstanding signal-free zones.
The joint statement from the Secretariats of State for Industry and for Territory reads: “The mobile coverage map of the Republic of San Marino is changing. With the activation of the installations at Croce di Domagnano, San Marino Città in the Kursaal area, and Murata at the former shooting range, the first phase of the strategic network modernization project has been completed. A concrete result. The upgrade now guarantees widespread and efficient voice and data transmission along the country’s main routes, eliminating longstanding blind spots.”
The project was carried out in collaboration between the Secretariat of State for Industry and the Secretariat of State for Territory. According to the statement, the project “marks the resolution of an impasse that had dragged on for more than twenty years, particularly regarding the state-owned site in Domagnano.”
The investment, exceeding 300,000 euros, was fully funded by TIM. “Fully funded by TIM with no financial contribution from public funds — for a total investment exceeding 300,000 euros — the project leaves ownership of the infrastructure in public hands, allowing access to all market operators according to principles of maximum interoperability,” the statement emphasizes.
The Secretary of State for Industry and Telecommunications, Rossano Fabbri, underlined the strategic value of the project: “The availability of stable, fast connections is the backbone of any modern economic system. We were not looking for a superficial fix, but for solid infrastructure capable of delivering tangible results for businesses, commercial operators and residents who experience the territory every day. Having achieved this first milestone at zero cost to the State demonstrates the effectiveness of the government’s action. Our attention is already turning to the next steps, aimed at consolidating Titano’s technological competitiveness on a European scale.”
According to surveys carried out, the improved signal is already evident, particularly along the Superstrada and in surrounding residential areas. The statement also specifies that “the new base radio stations operate in full compliance with regulatory parameters on public health protection, keeping electromagnetic emissions well below legal limits.”
To limit possible interference with older television equipment, the operator has also set up a system of financial contributions. “At the same time, to prevent disruption caused by possible interference with older domestic television signals, the operator has activated a support procedure offering reimbursements of up to 150 euros for the installation of appropriate filters,” the statement reads.
The Secretary of State for Territory, Matteo Ciacci, also commented on the project. “Resolving issues that had been pending for twenty years meant balancing the needs of technological development with respect for the landscape and urban planning. The work in Domagnano and other state-owned areas shows how advanced networks and environmental protection can be integrated through rigorous institutional dialogue. We have shown that safeguarding the public interest and modernizing infrastructure can move forward together, restoring efficiency to areas that until now had been at a disadvantage.”
With the completion of the first phase, the second stage of the plan will now begin. “The new installations will fill in the remaining network gaps, with priority attention given to the Castle of Borgo Maggiore and outlying areas,” while “the technical details and timeline for the next round of works will be officially presented to the press in the coming weeks at a dedicated public event.” The stated goal is to complete mobile network coverage across the entire territory of the Republic, ensuring uniform service standards.
