The water situation in San Marino remains under close observation. The rainfall expected in recent weeks has failed to materialize, and the Marecchia river and reservoirs continue to suffer from the prolonged heat and drought. At present, however, there is no complete lack of water. AASS director general Marcello Forcellini gave an update in an interview with San Marino RTV.
“The situation needs to be kept under monitoring, although we are not yet facing a total absence of water,” Forcellini explained, noting that the diversification of supply sources allows the country to face this phase with greater security.
Meanwhile, consumption has fallen. According to San Marino RTV, water usage has dropped by roughly 15-20% since the ordinance issued on August 10. At the peak of demand in August, consumption had reached around 11,000 cubic meters per day, but it has since fallen to about 9,500 cubic meters.
San Marino draws approximately 60% of its water from the Marecchia river and Lake Torello, 5% from internal sources, and the remainder through Hera and Ridracoli.
Attention remains focused above all on Lake Torello, whose water level continues to drop. “We keep it under constant monitoring,” said Forcellini. “Withdrawals are fairly stable, and so is the inflow, so from that point of view we’re fairly reassured — but we still need to do everything possible to limit consumption.”
AASS is now looking ahead to the arrival of autumn and its rainfall, which could help improve a situation that remains delicate but, for now, under control.
