Tourism: over one million visitors in summer 2026

San Marino's summer season sets new records, with more overnight stays, fewer cars and growing numbers on buses and the new Treno Bianco Azzurro line.

Between June and September San Marino welcomed more than one million and seventy-seven thousand visitors, with the hospitality sector showing solid growth: overnight tourists on the Titano rose by 4.40%, with the average length of stay climbing to 1.79 nights.

The way visitors arrive is also changing. In summer 2026, 16,500 fewer cars entered the Republic, a drop attributed both to rising fuel costs and to the strengthening of public transport. Particularly notable is the performance of the Rimini–San Marino bus line, which came close to 350,000 passengers. The cable car, however, saw a decline, carrying 54,000 fewer passengers than in 2025 — a dip the Secretariat for Tourism attributes to the temporary closure of the Baldasserona car park for renovation works and to the increase in ticket prices.

The figures for the SMAC card used in the historic centre are also encouraging, up 5.66% across retail, accommodation and dining. Further positive signs come from the new stretch of the Treno Bianco Azzurro (Blue and White Train): from its opening through 30 September, it completed 263 trips carrying a total of 3,284 visitors.

In the summer just ended, foreign tourists outnumbered Italian ones, although the balance typically shifts back over the course of the full year. Visitors came mainly from Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, as well as from the United States, Poland, France, Austria and Switzerland.

The question of accommodation capacity remains unresolved. “Every year our hotels are completely full, yet there’s a long-standing problem: when it comes to hotels, unfortunately, they’re always the same ones — no new ones are being built,” observes Secretary of State for Tourism Federico Pedini Amati. “My commitment over these years, together with the Government, has been to try to seek out or encourage investors to come and open the famous ‘5-star hotel’. There have been some contacts, but that’s a matter for the private sector — the State can’t conjure anything out of thin air, except perhaps by offering some favourable conditions.”

Upcoming events are already on the calendar: the TTG travel trade show in Rimini and then Natale delle Meraviglie (Christmas of Wonders), which this year is being organised directly by the Secretariat and the Tourism Office.
