The San Marino mixed doubles pairing of Mattias Mongiusti and Chiara Morri saw their run at the XX Mediterranean Games end in the round of 16. The two blue-and-white athletes were defeated this morning (Saturday, August 29) at the “Giovanni Paolo II” Sports Hall in Massafra by the Tunisian pair Wassim Essid (already a European Under-19 champion) and Alaa Saidi, who won 3-0, with set scores of 12-10, 13-11, 11-3. The first two sets were tight and hard-fought, with the San Marino duo staying in contention throughout. For the national table tennis team, led by head coach Claudio Stefanelli, the next challenge will be the singles draw, which gets under way tomorrow.
The San Marino delegation will return to competition tomorrow, Sunday, August 30, in athletics and equestrian events, both scheduled for the late afternoon.
