Territory plan unveiled: from the former Excelsior to Baldasserona

The Secretariat for Territory lays out upcoming works, from student housing to road resurfacing and de-sealing projects.

From the former Excelsior to Baldasserona, by way of the Scala Malagola, road resurfacing in Borgo Maggiore and new de-paving projects. The Secretariat of State for Territory has set out a list of construction sites, projects and priorities for the coming months, guided by one underlying principle: concentrating resources on the works considered most urgent.

Among these is the transformation of the former Excelsior, which will include 24 rooms for students. At this stage, the Secretariat is giving this project greater priority than, for example, Villa Malagola, a property owned by Banca Agricola Commerciale.

On the construction front, the renovation of the Baldasserona car park is expected to be completed in 2027, while work on the Scala Malagola is due to finish by Easter next year.

Turning to Borgo Maggiore: around 2 million euros have already been allocated for road resurfacing, with a similar sum earmarked for next year. The question of the former Music Institute (ex Istituto Musicale) also remains open, with the State Public Works Authority (Azienda Autonoma di Stato per i Lavori Pubblici) currently developing a design featuring a series of targeted interventions.

Another piece of the roadmap concerns land de-sealing, aimed at removing asphalt and concrete where possible in order to restore green spaces and permeable surfaces. Following the experience at Piazzale Menicucci, the next project will begin in Laiala. The subject will also be explored further during a public meeting at the Montelupo hall, organised by the Secretariat for Territory with experts from Genoa and Forlì.

Projects already completed include Palazzo Begni, the city ice-skating rink, the little train, pavements, redevelopment work in Chiesanuova and Montegiardino, and improvements at the cemeteries of Fiorentino and Domagnano, alongside general clean-up and land management works.

The Secretariat also reports progress on telecommunications, with improved coverage now available in Domagnano, Murata and Fiorentino.

Finally, on health and social care: in addition to the new hospital project and the forthcoming opening of the Borgo Maggiore health centre, a new private, publicly affiliated care home for the elderly is planned in Chiesanuova, in the area of the former Karnak, offering around 70 places.
