Two golds and a bronze in a single day for San Marino at the XX Mediterranean Games. The delegation’s first major triumphs came in bowls, in the raffa discipline, with the Sammarinese national anthem played twice at the Palazzetto dello Sport in Montemesola.
The undisputed star of the day was Jacopo Frisoni, who claimed gold in the individual event before repeating the feat in the pairs competition alongside Enrico Dall’Olmo. Rounding out the day’s haul was a bronze medal for sisters Stella and Giada Paoletti. The result allows San Marino to improve on its bowls performance at Oran 2022, where it won one gold, one silver and one bronze.
The Captains Regent, Alice Mina and Vladimiro Selva, attended the medal ceremony, along with the Secretary of State for Sport, Rossano Fabbri, the president of the National Olympic Committee (CONS), Christian Forcellini, and secretary general Eros Bologna. It was Forcellini himself who presented the medals to the Sammarinese athletes on the podium.
The Captains Regent also joined the delegation for the Games’ official dinner, held on Tuesday 25 August at the Faro Masseria in Taranto. The institutional presence underscored the importance San Marino places on taking part in an international event that brings together countries from across the Mediterranean region.
“The Republic of San Marino’s participation in the XX Mediterranean Games is a moment of great pride and responsibility,” said Fabbri. “Our delegation, made up of talented athletes and a highly qualified staff, embodies the values of dedication, passion and team spirit that sport is able to convey. The presence of the Captains Regent at the official dinner lent further prestige to our mission, highlighting how sport is not only about competition, but also diplomacy, culture and identity.”
San Marino is competing at the Games with 29 athletes — 16 women and 13 men — taking part in 11 disciplines: athletics, bowls, cycling, equestrian sports, swimming, fin swimming, tennis, table tennis, rifle shooting, trap shooting and archery. The mission is led by Anna Lisa Ciavatta, supported by deputy heads Maurizio Mazza and Lucia Castiglioni.
Among the notable features of this year’s expedition is the return of equestrian sports to the Mediterranean Games for the first time since Almería 2005, with Nicole Conti representing Mount Titano. The delegation, which will remain in competition until 3 September, brings together experienced athletes and rising young talents of Sammarinese sport.
