San Marino dog poisoning case: trial date set for 85-year-old accused of spreading fear on Titano

Giorgio Cellarosi to appear before judge on November 16 over poisoned baits that targeted dogs across San Marino.

The trial of Giorgio Cellarosi, the 85-year-old San Marino resident accused of poisoning several dogs on Titano, will open on November 16 at 3pm. The man will appear before Judge Vico Valentini to answer charges of animal cruelty and endangering public health.

The case had sparked considerable debate in San Marino, particularly after poisoned bait was found in several public areas, prompting the Institute for Social Security (ISS) to temporarily ban access to the affected zones.

The investigation, led by the Gendarmerie and Civil Police under the coordination of Law Commissioner Elisa Beccari, focused on incidents dating back to February 2022 and April 2025. Reports from citizens and from APAS, the local animal protection association, proved decisive in triggering the inquiry.

During the investigation, Cellarosi was also placed under house arrest. In October 2025, he was committed to trial on the basis of evidence gathered by investigators.

It will now be up to the court to examine the charges and determine any responsibility on the part of the defendant. The first hearing will focus on preliminary matters and the formal constitution of the parties, before moving on to the substance of the poisoning allegations.
