A man was found lifeless in the car park of the Vision Club, in the municipality of Verucchio, on the border with San Marino. He was lying face down on the asphalt, with facial injuries consistent with a fall. Investigators are trying to determine what happened: an accidental fall, a sudden illness, or the intervention of a third party who may have attacked the man. At this stage no line of inquiry has been ruled out, and the investigation is proceeding on all fronts.
The victim is a 34-year-old Albanian national who had arrived in Italy only recently and was, according to initial information gathered by investigators, in the process of arranging work as a bricklayer. He was not a resident of the area, and checks are under way to establish where he had been staying and to reconstruct his movements.
He was spotted by a passer-by who was heading to collect their car from the car park. Noticing a San Marino law enforcement patrol making a U-turn near the border customs post, the passer-by flagged down the officers and alerted them to the man lying on the ground. San Marino’s police force notified their Italian counterparts and the Italian emergency medical service (118), remaining at the scene until their arrival. Paramedics attempted to resuscitate him, but were unable to save his life.
Around 11:30pm last night, investigators from the Rimini carabinieri’s investigative unit also arrived at the scene, and a coroner was called in. Attention is focused on the facial injuries, which may have been caused by the impact with the asphalt – though it remains to be established what caused the fall in the first place, and whether the involvement of other people can be ruled out.
Investigations are still ongoing. It will be up to the judicial authorities to decide whether to order an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
