San Marino RTV, Sergio: «We don’t want to be a little Rai». And he doesn’t rule out a return to Viale Mazzini

The general manager outlines a distinct editorial identity for the Titano broadcaster while leaving the door open to a future role at Italian state TV.

San Marino RTV must find its own path, without chasing Rai’s model. That is the line set out by general manager Roberto Sergio, who in an interview with La Stampa discusses the future of the San Marino broadcaster, its editorial projects, and a possible return to the top of Italian public television.

“San Marino RTV must be a great television station for its size, not a copy of Rai. We have to build an identity of our own,” explains the former chief executive of Viale Mazzini.

It is a challenge Sergio considers stimulating, drawing on his previous professional experience — from Sogei to Lottomatica and on to Rai. The goal is to build a recognisable project that makes the most of the Titano broadcaster’s potential.

This is also the direction behind the arrival of well-known faces from Italian journalism and television, including Dario Fabbri, Monica Giandotti, Myrta Merlino, Giovanni Terzi, Mauro Mazza, Red Ronnie and Vittoriana Abate.

“We’re not collecting names, we’re cultivating an editorial project,” Sergio points out, confirming that he will remain committed to developing San Marino RTV throughout 2027.

As for his own professional future, however, he does not rule out a return to Rai. Among the possibilities is a candidacy for the next board of directors of Italy’s public broadcaster.

Finally, Sergio addresses the issue of political interference in Rai’s management, criticising the practice of political quota-sharing (lottizzazione) when party allegiances end up taking precedence over competence. For the former chief executive, public service broadcasting needs greater stability, editorial autonomy and freedom of decision-making.
