EU agreement, Generazione Libera: “The real work starts now”

The youth movement welcomes the signing of the Association Agreement, calling it a decisive step for students, workers and young entrepreneurs in San Marino.

Generazione Libera has welcomed the signing of the Association Agreement between San Marino and the European Union as a decisive step for new generations. In its statement, the movement focuses on the prospects for students, workers and young entrepreneurs, arguing that European integration and the protection of the Republic’s identity are fully compatible.

“For decades San Marino has lived suspended between safeguarding its centuries-old sovereignty and the need not to remain isolated from the economic, social and cultural heart of the continent. Today we are showing that these two elements are not in conflict. Being European does not mean giving up our identity at all — on the contrary, it means giving it a wider space, dignity and far more solid guarantees.”

For the movement, the signing opens a new phase that now calls for concrete commitment. Opportunities for young people are at the heart of the position expressed by Generazione Libera.

“As Generazione Libera, we are experiencing this day with deep emotion, but above all with the awareness that the real work starts now. This agreement is, first and foremost, the great pact for young Sammarinese people, who for far too long have borne the limits of an isolation that has penalised their aspirations.”

On education, the statement highlights exchange and mobility programmes, starting with Erasmus, as well as the recognition of qualifications. On employment, the movement points to the removal of obstacles to the recognition of professional qualifications as a tool to encourage experience abroad and the subsequent return of skills to San Marino.

“Likewise, removing the obstacles to the recognition of professional qualifications will allow young workers to undertake internships, international careers or self-employed activities in any country of the Union without delays or discrimination, later reinvesting in our Republic an exceptional wealth of skills and global outlook.”

Access to the single market is identified as another prospect for those looking to start or grow a business. Generazione Libera points in particular to small businesses, startups and the sectors of innovation, digitalisation and ecological transition.

“Integration also throws open the doors of the single market to the ideas and energy of those who want to start a business. Small companies, startups and young talents will no longer have to contend with geographical borders, banking restrictions or customs red tape.”

The movement also points to participation in European youth networks, seen as a space in which to bring San Marino’s voice to discussions on climate, rights and employment. To those who express doubts about the path towards association, Generazione Libera responds by linking the protection of the Republic to its ability to offer tools and opportunities to new generations.

“To those who view this step with fear or distrust, we respond that the true protection of the Republic lies in its ability to evolve and to offer new generations the same tools and rights as their European peers.”
