San Marino hosts conference on De Gasperi and the idea of a reform-driven centre

Public meeting in Domagnano revisits Alcide De Gasperi's legacy and the notion of a political centre capable of driving reform.

The enduring relevance of Alcide De Gasperi and his civic and European legacy will take centre stage at a public meeting scheduled for Tuesday, October 13 at 4pm in the Sala Montelupo in Domagnano. The National Association of Christian Democrats (ANDC) invites the public to the presentation of Igino Giordani’s book “Alcide De Gasperi. Rivoluzione, Riforme, Libertà” (“Alcide De Gasperi: Revolution, Reforms, Freedom”), published by Studium in a new edition edited by Lucio D’Ubaldo and Alberto Lo Presti, with an introduction by Giuseppe Fioroni.

The event is held under the patronage of the Secretariat of State for Foreign Affairs. Secretary of State Luca Beccari will deliver institutional greetings, while Giuseppe Fioroni, former Italian minister of education, will introduce the discussion. Journalist Osvaldo Bevilacqua will moderate the event, with closing remarks by Lucio D’Ubaldo, the book’s editor.

Speakers will include the Bishop of San Marino-Montefeltro Domenico Beneventi, Italy’s ambassador to San Marino Fabrizio Colaceci, the rector of the University of San Marino Paolo Pascucci, and the director of the Salesians of San Marino, Father Marco Mazzanti. Also taking part in the discussion will be Councillor Francesco Mussoni and Nicola Barone, ambassador, special envoy and chairman of TIM San Marino.

The book revives Igino Giordani’s account of the man who led Italy’s democratic reconstruction and tied its future to Europe. From this starting point, the discussion will explore the relationship between freedom, reform and democracy, as well as the contribution of Christian culture to public life.

The San Marino event has also drawn attention from Il Domani d’Italia, which links it to a conference held the same day in Rome by the De Gasperi Foundation. The newspaper sees in the Titano debate an echo of the call for a political centre capable of steering change and promoting reform, in line with De Gasperi’s own formula of a “centre marching toward the left.” The Rome event, meanwhile, will delve into the relationship between Christian democracy, liberalism and conservatism, with particular attention to the German experience.
