San Marino launches grants to sterilise cats and dogs in fight against strays

APAS offers 45 subsidies to encourage pet sterilisation and curb abandonment and stray animals across the Republic.

Financial incentives for those who decide to sterilise their dog or cat, aimed at preventing abandonment and the spread of stray animals. The “+ Sterilisations – Abandonments” campaign is back in San Marino, promoted by the San Marino Animal Protection Association (APAS) in collaboration with the State-owned Public Services Company (Azienda Autonoma di Stato per i Servizi Pubblici).

APAS is making 45 grants available: 80 euros for the sterilisation of female cats, with 25 places available; 50 euros for male cats, with 10 places; and 100 euros for female dogs, again with 10 places.

The initiative is reserved for San Marino citizens and residents, with one grant per household and subject to availability.

Bookings will open on Saturday 10, 17 and 24 October, from 2pm to 6pm, by calling 0549 992558. To receive the grant, applicants must present the veterinary receipt: the procedure must be carried out after booking, with documentation submitted by 15 April 2027.

The campaign aims not only to reduce the risk of unwanted litters and subsequent abandonment, but also to raise owners’ awareness of the health and welfare benefits of sterilisation for animals. Any unused places may later be reassigned.
