San Marino tightens rules: no plates for e-scooters, but helmets now mandatory for cyclists too

New road code changes announced for electric scooters and bicycles in San Marino.

The rules governing electric scooters and bicycles are changing in San Marino. The new measures were outlined by Secretary of State for Internal Affairs Andrea Belluzzi during a press conference held by the Congress of State (Congresso di Stato), following the approval of a delegated decree that partially amends the highway code.

The most significant change concerns electric scooters. Unlike in Italy, there will be no requirement for a license plate on Titano. Instead, riders will be required to wear a helmet and use lights.

This regulatory difference will have practical consequences for those crossing the border: San Marino scooters without a plate will not be allowed to circulate in Italy, where different requirements apply, and it will not be possible to register or plate the San Marino vehicle abroad.

The tightened rules also extend to bicycles, for which helmets and lights will become mandatory. A new ban on riding side by side has also been introduced: cyclists will now be required to travel in single file.

Finally, on overtaking safety: a new road sign will be trialled to indicate the requirement to maintain a distance of at least one and a half metres when passing a bicycle or a two-wheeled electric vehicle.
