Eleven young people, ten days spent together in an ancient deconsecrated church, and a project to build: a free radio station through which to make their voices heard. This is the experience at the heart of “E se ora, lontano – Un’altra voce esiste” (“And if now, far away – Another voice exists”), the creative documentary directed by Massimo Selis, arriving in San Marino for the first time. The screening is scheduled for Wednesday, 14 October at 9pm at the Cinema Concordia.

Among the protagonists is young Sammarinese Ruben Berveglieri, who will attend the evening alongside Chiara Florit and the filmmakers. “The creators and protagonists will talk about the idea that inspired the film and will engage in dialogue with the audience,” reads the press release announcing the event.

Produced by the Olbia-based company Phausania Film, with the patronage of the Municipality of Perugia, the feature film was shot in Umbria, on the hills above Lake Trasimeno. Selis wrote the story and screenplay together with Belinda Bruni. The narrative follows the young people through their communal life — shared work, music, and discussions on how to bring their ideas to the outside world.

“10 days, 10 nights, 11 young people, an ancient deconsecrated church, a project to carry out: a free radio station to make their voice known, a voice like you’ve never heard before,” the press release states. The filmmakers describe it as “a poetic, disarming and ‘political’ portrait of the so-called Generation Z, told through two perspectives: that of the director and that of the young people themselves.”

At the heart of the conversations are political engagement, the relationship with technology, relationships, and spiritual searching. The press release highlights “politics as grassroots commitment that calls each of us into question; the rediscovery of a sense of community belonging, where individual destiny becomes part of something greater; awareness of an increasingly invasive technology that even alters the perception of one’s own identity; the need for authentic, genuine relationships built outside the virtual world; spiritual searching experienced in a world ever more materialistic and devoted to appearances, along with many other themes close to their hearts.”

The experience is told through two different filming approaches: the camera’s shots are combined with footage captured by the protagonists themselves using a phone. “The camera composes fixed frames where editing is almost absent and time stretches out, while the iPhone enters the scenes, passed from hand to hand among the protagonists, conveying a fragmented, dynamic sense of time,” the press release explains. The cinematography is by Dario Di Viesto and Massimo Selis.

The original soundtrack is by Fabio Di Viesto, who describes his work as follows: “it accompanies and highlights the poetic dimension of the film. It enters the moments where words fall silent, between images and silences, reaching a more emotional, interior space that words alone cannot touch.” Also featured is music composed and performed by the young people themselves during the scenes.

“The ending is built like a letter to the viewer — a letter that invites us to bring into our own reality the atmosphere of those days at the church,” the press release continues. Alongside the screening, the evening at the Concordia will also feature a discussion with the filmmakers and protagonists on the themes explored in the film, aimed in particular at parents, teachers, and anyone who works closely with young people.
