It was Prince Albert II of Monaco who revealed the news, in an interview with Corriere della Sera: «Kimi Antonelli is also thinking about moving to Monaco». The Formula 1 driver, born in Bologna, currently lives in San Marino, and a possible move to the Principality would put him on the same path already taken by other prominent Italian athletes.
In the same interview, the prince tries to explain what draws athletes and champions to Monaco, and the answer isn’t only the obvious one. «Of course there’s the financial side,» he admits, «but speaking with them I understand that much of the appeal of our country has to do with quality of life, the climate and, above all, safety».
For the Republic, it would mean losing a resident who in just a few years has become one of the most recognisable names in international sport, and a signal that competition among small states for the residency of top athletes is far from settled. For now, however, this remains an intention reported by a third party: the driver himself has not confirmed anything.
