The fifth International Congress of Gerontology and Geriatrics, organized by the San Marino Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics (ASGG), got underway on Thursday, September 24, at the Kursaal Congress Centre in San Marino. The event, dedicated to the theme “Technological Advances in Geriatrics Care: Present and Future,” will run through Saturday, September 26.
The first day opened with a pre-congress course titled “Communication in Health Services as a Tool for Managing Complexity and Empowering Citizens,” moderated by Fausto Marchetta. Discussions focused on how scientific information is communicated, continuity of care, and dialogue with citizens.
The opening ceremony took place in the afternoon, led by ASGG president Carlo Renzini. Speakers included the Secretary of State for Health and Social Security, Massimo Andrea Ugolini, the director of San Marino’s Hospital Department, Gabriele Donati, and the congress’s co-chairs, Arduino Aleksander Mangoni and José Ricardo Jauregui.
According to a statement from the association, the first day’s lectures were “dedicated respectively to social prescribing and loneliness, the relationship between infections, vaccines and dementia, inflammaging, and palliative care for the very elderly.” The presentations were delivered by Diego De Leo, Stefania Maggi, Claudio Franceschi and Pierangelo Lora Aprile. The program also addressed longevity, gerontechnology and telecare, with particular attention to the connection between hospitals and community-based services.
Proceedings continue today, Friday, September 25, with sessions focusing on, among other topics, cardiogeriatrics, neurodegenerative diseases and nutrition in the elderly. The event will close on Saturday with a workshop organized in collaboration with ANASTE, the National Association of Territorial and Elderly Care Facilities. That day will be dedicated to residential healthcare facilities, addressing “the management of therapies and vaccinations, organizational and technological innovation,” and the evolving needs of care.
